13 great author websites

This may be slightly harsh, but author websites often seem to be under-utliised resources. A wasted opportunity when your website can work much harder for you. We need to think beyond a website being a mostly static online business card and think more how can this become a hub for our activity?

I have picked 13 (yes, there are actually 16 :)) author websites I think do just this. Click on the images to go through to the home pages.

Most of the traffic that comes to your website will land on your home page, so you need to make sure this page represents you as an author, explain clearly how to navigate around the site and also include a call to action - be that sign up to my newsletter, pre-order my book or find out more about my books. If you have a newsletter then I recommend you have a sign up mechanism on your homge page, preferably with some sort of incentive like a free ebook or illustration or similar. (see Diana Urban’s home page).

Design-wise your website should work within your genre and be visually appealing.

The main areas of the site should include:

  • Books

  • Events

  • Contact/About

  • Media Kit

  • Links to social

  • Newsletter sign up page

And other areas of the site you might want to consider:

  • Blog

  • Sample chapters

  • Audiobooks

  • Other products (box sets etc)

  • Videos

  • TV & Film

  • Merchandise

  • FAQs
